The act of making glass beads is an ancient art form! Dating back as far as the 5th century, artists in Murano, Italy, would produce glass beads using the heat of an oil lamp! While the technology has certainly evolved, the techniques used by today’s lampworkers (or flameworkers) aren’t unlike those used in the early stages of this art form.
Now you can learn these ancient techniques, with a little modern flair! With our new Path to Independence courses, our teaching artists will help transition you from student to independent renter in no time at all! All you have to do is pick your studio, then complete four levels of instruction – starting with the basics in Level 1 and finishing with supervised independent work in Level 4. You can complete each level in two ways:
Working with 8 other students at the most, you will get up close and personal with a torch as you melt down glass rods and transform them into beautiful beads and small sculptures! Over the course, you will learn advancing techniques that will lead you to creating your own beautiful beads as an independent renter!
