Last weekend we welcomed members of Congregation Shaare Emeth to Third Degree for a unique Experience. About 50 guests sat down to create custom fused glass mezuzahs and experience a glassblowing demonstration.
A mezuzah is a parchment inscribed with religious texts and attached in a case to the doorpost of a Jewish house as a sign of faith. While sharing joy and time with other members, this unique Experience gave them the chance to customize a mezuzah and make their own meaningful and unique piece, tying into Shaare Emeth’s mission to be a compassionate and inclusive community that makes Judaism relevant, meaningful and joyful.
The mezuzahs were designed by cutting and layering cold pieces of glass which are then fused inside a kiln. After the initial firing they were placed on top of a piece of fiberglass paper and fired for a second time to create a hollow space to hold the religious text. While creating mezuzahs was a first for our instructors, they were happy to share their passion for glass with others in a unique and meaningful way.
