Sam Hyken-Future Glass Artist

We love it when campers return for more glass camp. And this year – for the first time – not only did a camper return, but he raised the bar when he attended two back-to-back sessions this summer. Sam may only be 10 yrs. old, but he’s inspired and burning to learn!

What sparked your interest in glass?  When I realized that art can be created from it.

How did you hear about camp?  My mom found out about Third Degree. And when she told me about camp I really wanted to go.

Why did you sign up for two glass camps this summer?  Because it’s the most fun camp ever and I want to get better.

What do you like creating?  Beads! You heat the glass up right in front of you and it’s amazing. And I get to work independently. Flameworking is 100% ME.

How has working in glass changed how you think about glass?  I thought machines created glass art – not artists. Now I get to be an artist.

What else are you doing this summer?  More camps! Robots, 3D game design. More art and science. But I’m already wanting to sign up for as much glass camp as my mom will let me next summer.

This summer, 88 campers learned about glass and created their own masterpieces. Third Degree offers four weeks of summer camp in partnership with COCA and the St. Louis Science Center.
