On Thursday, October 11, Girls in the Know (GITK) will be hosting their “Knowledge & Power: Small Bites & Big Ideas” fundraiser in our art-infused galleries here at Third Degree Glass Factory. This annual fundraiser supports GITK’s mission “to educate and empower girls, together with those who love them, by providing tools to establish a strong sense of self.”
After booking their event at Third Degree, the organizers of this event wanted to explore a fun, unique way to incorporate the beauty of glass into their fundraiser. That’s when Sandy Krebeck, Fused Glass Studio assistant, stepped up.
Before Sandy got into glass fusing, she was (and still is) an avid creator of glass mosaics. Pulling inspiration from old projects, and GITK’s frequent use of the heart symbol, Sandy worked with youth ambassadors to create a one-of-a-kind mosaic to be auctioned off at the upcoming fundraiser.
After sketching out the design on a large piece of paper, Sandy laid out an old window on top of it to begin the design. Using her own stock of scrap glass, she and the young women cut and laid out the glass into the design, gluing each piece one by one. The empty space around the design was filled in with clear glass, and the final design will be grouted as the event gets closer.
We at Third Degree love sharing our passion for glass with anyone looking for an amazing experience! We are grateful for the many artists like Sandy who lend their time, materials and talent to helping important causes. Take a look at the artwork in progress!
