Third Degree Makes it Easy to Become a Glass Artist

Glass is amazing! Always dynamic and changing, glass can be fluid, sot, cold, hard, opaque, transparent and more. Working with glass is like a dance — sometimes solo, sometimes with a team. Glass is captivating, fun and addictive–whether creating your own piece or watching someone else make theirs.

Many of the artists at Third Degree Glass Factory have been producing original glass artwork for over a decade, and continue to learn something new every time they work with the material. With over 40 artists creating work in our three studios, it is not difficult to see the infinite number of techniques used to create glass art.

If you’ve fallen in love with the artwork in our gallery, or been captivated by our demonstrations or even the many viral glassmaking videos online, you’ve already discovered your passion for glass! The next step is to start creating your own.

The Path to Independence

Come join our community! Over 20 individuals have gone from novice to independent renter since the beginning of 2017, thanks to our Path to Independence course!

Our Path to Independence is offered monthly in a 4-week Tuesday night class, 6:00p-9:00p. When you register, you select which of our three glass art media you’d like to start learning:

  • Blow and sculpt glowing molten glass into magnificent vessels and sculptures in the Hotshop (Glassblowing studio).
  • Take a seat at a hot torch, melting down glass rods to create beautiful beads and small sculptures in the Flameworking studio.
  • Measure, cut and layer cold sheets of glass, then melt them down inside a kiln in our Fused Glass studio.

Don’t know where to start? Try our Glass Art Sampler class for a quick, fun introduction to all three studios!

With each class session, you will receive a hands-on experience by our passionate and experienced glass artists! As you advance through the four levels, you will expand your knowledge of various techniques. By the completion of the 4th and final level, you are ready to start making glass on your own as an independent artist! And yes, you get to take home everything you make in the process.

What happens next?

After completing all four levels, you are ready to be a certified renting artist! All independent artists are given opportunities to sell their artwork in our gallery, teach or assist in classes or at our monthly Third Friday open house, and many other unique opportunities!

We will not be hosting classes in August due to the heat. Our first fall session starts Tuesday, September 4, just in time for you to complete our Path to Independence coursework before 2019! Register online!
